The overhaul series pertains to engines that are either too large for our standard machine park or ones that we frequently build. Stage 1: Cleaning We use steel bristles and an industrial washing machine to clean all engine parts thoroughly. We avoid sandblasting as it can damage the engine after a few miles.
Stage 2: Inspection We inspect the engine block for cracks or damage by lightly grinding the surface through pressure checking. If necessary, we repair the block through stitching, welding, or metal putty. We also measure all bores to determine if we can proceed to the next oversize or if we need to install new, high-durable cylinders. Stage 3: Machining We machine the valve seats and cylinders in two operations. During the first operation, we bore the cylinders accordingly to install new cylinder sleeves and valve seats. We use a combination of old and new technology, including calibrated micrometers, a corresponding two-point bore gauge indicator, and the famous Renishaw probing system for measuring and inspecting.
For the second operation, we remove the engine block from the Haas and hammer the valves with the correct preload. We press the cylinder sleeves into the correct preload using a hydraulic press. We do not discuss preload on our website as our 60+ years of experience should suffice. After manual labor, we reload the engine block on the Haas and run the second operation. We use the first and last valve seat hole bored in the previous operation, aligning the engine block within a few thousandths of a millimeter using the Renishaw probe and dial indication. However, a hundredth of a millimeter will suffice.
Once the machining is complete on the Haas, we move the block to the line boring machine and machine it accordingly to the ground crankshaft.
